How Much Are YOU Willing To Spend To Get Elected???

SARASOTA, FL (NS) -

How bad do YOU want to be elected to Public Office in Florida?

I have sat back for several years now and attended many Political meetings where the sums of money being talked about for this Candidate and another have been mind boggling...

Let me give you an example of this year in the 13th Congressional District. There are 2 men running a MILLION dollar campaign to try and gain the GOP Party nomination for Congress. This is a position that pays $150,000 per year plus the 'perks' that go along with the position. You know the Congressional seat currently occupied by Katharene Harris???

When I heard Candidate Tramm Hudson stand up in front of a roomful of people and say he already had raised $250,000 for his Congressional Campaign and wouldn't be surprised if his opponent, Millionaire Car Dealer Vern Buchanon, made this a MILLION dollar campaign for a Congressional seat, I almost choked. We haven't even gotten to the Primary Election yet...

This is absolutely absurd and it led me to do some more grassroots investigation of elected offices down to the County level...

What I've been able to find out would just blow the average voter away. Tens of thousands of dollars being spent just to get an elected office that might only pay the winner $15,000 to $25,000 per year...

So, just WHAT drives these people, not always the best qualified candidates, to go out and get as much money as they can for a position that pays LESS, in many cases, then what the Candidate is already making in their profession...

Shall we start with the word POWER??? That's the only thing that seems to make any sense. Sure they all have benefits when they get elected, but it's the 'power' they are looking for or that little title they get, "The Honorable"...

I for one say it's about time we stopped this practice right here in Florida of 'unlimited amounts of money' being allowed to fund Political Campaigns. And I further submit to all of you that ALL Elected Public Offices be limited to '2' Terms only all across the board...

A highly qualified candidate running for Public Office without a BIG bankroll, doesn't stand a chance of getting elected ANYWHERE...

The big bucks that fuel Florida elections are still rolling in unchecked, despite talk of reform and attempts to control lobbying. Florida is one of just 13 states with no caps on how much can be given to political parties. Wonder if Senator John McCain would consider bringing some of his Campaign Finance reform THIS way???

For the 2006 election cycle, the Republican Party of Florida has reported 426 donations of $10,000 or more, a total of $8.1 million, according to an analysis of financial reports which you can find by doing a search on the internet. The Florida Democratic Party got 129 such donations, or $2.42 million...

BOTH Political Parties are subscribing to this policy and it needs to be stopped...

That core of big donors provided more than half the money raised by each party, making the thousands of smaller donations look tiny. The party contributions are not subject to the $500 limit that state law applies to individual candidates...

Not a week doesn't go by that I get something in my mail from a Political Party or Candidate asking me for money, even when there's NO election taking place. This is ridiculous!!!

Just think about what this Campaign finance case decision said. The U.S. Supreme Court noted in the 1976 case Buckley v. Valeo, because "to the extent that large contributions are given to secure a political quid pro quo [one thing in return for another] from current and potential office holders, the integrity of our system of representative democracy is undermined."

Money sent directly to the political parties rather than candidates technically is meant only for "party building activities," but the law and the courts allow almost unlimited interpretations of that term...

The parties end up funneling millions of dollars back to individual candidates as "in-kind donations" for such items as campaign staff, utilities, printing, office rent and consulting services...

The impact a single individual, business or interest group can have with unlimited donations becomes clear with the size of the checks. Along with the large sums of money, comes the 'influence'...

The Democratic Party got a $185,000 donation from the Victory 2006 political committee in Tallahassee, and Ginn Development Co. of Celebration gave $150,000 to the Republican Party...

All told for the period, there were seven $100,000 checks and 27 for $50,000, some from Tampa area companies including Amscot Corp. and the Outback Steakhouse PAC. Statewide, Disney Worldwide Services, Jacksonville Greyhound Racing Inc., Florida Power & Light and other companies made donations of $50,000 or more...

Wealthy individuals play a big role, too. Take Lawrence DeGeorge, of Jupiter. He gave the Republican Party $15,000 on Feb. 1, 2005, then $25,000 on April 8. In May he made donations of $100 and $5,000, then $100,000 on June 23 - matching the largest donation by an individual for the cycle...

DeGeorge sent $100 on June 30, then $50,000 and $25,000 in September. On Oct. 12, he gave a final $50,000, bringing his yearly donations to the Republican Party of Florida to $270,200...

Democrats have their big-money angels, too. Frank Brunckhorst, of Sarasota, of Boar's Head Provisions Co., gave the party $60,000 in April, and a trust associated with him added $100,000 in September...

For example, gambling interests in Florida used 37 donations to give more than $481,000 to the Republican Party of Florida. The Democratic Party got three donations totaling just over $2,200. Anybody notice the new Indian Gaming Casino down in Hollywood, FL???

Most groups are giving money in the hopes of gaining some access to the Political system and gaining a favorable decision that would directly benefit THEM. It is widely accepted that big donors do get more access than average citizens...

Some companies balance their donations. Tampa's TECO Energy Inc. gave $40,000 to the Democratic Party and $182,500 to the Republican Party...

The Ginn Development Co., which made the $150,000 donation to the Republican Party, obviously sees things in the same way because they gave money to both Parties....

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, the only other states that do this are Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Maine, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah and Virginia...

The National Conference lists 23 states as limiting political party contributions from most or all sources and 14 states as limiting donations from corporations and labor unions but not other sources...

Louisiana set a limit of $100,000 on individual, corporate or union contributions over a four-year period, and Vermont allows $2,000 per two-year election cycle...

Wisconsin prohibits all corporate and union donations and limits individuals to $10,000 a year and political action committees to $6,000...

And all of these huge donations are being given in the name of "Free Speech." I've heard people say that Political contributions amount to free speech. Oh really???

I would personally favor more disclosure for Section 527 political funds, named after their IRS code number. These tax-exempt funds, often created by unions, politicians or special interest groups, can be used to buy campaign ads on specific issues - such as gun control, abortion and tax policy...

They have fewer disclosure requirements than other political organizations, and that means some of the big gifts made in the final stages of a campaign don't become public until after the election...

What do YOU think would happen if more financial disclosure was required to tell us, the VOTERS, where the Political money was coming from???

Like her Republican counterpart, Florida Democratic Party Chairwoman Karen Thurman wouldn't endorse limits on big-money contributions...

"Part of me wants to say sure, because we're behind in the money game, but the other part of me says no," Thurman said. "The answer is still no."

Unfortunately this is the one issue where Republican and Democratic leaders agree, and that means there's going to be no economic campaign financing reform on the horizon. But there SHOULD be...

This is the policy that is obviously being adheered to in Florida, and it's apparent that neither Political Party wants to slow down the unlimited flow of money...

So now that you know how things are done in Florida, how big is YOUR wallet??? If you're planning on running for Public Office, how much do YOU want to spend to be an elected Official???

Somehow, I really think that BUYING your way into an elected position, is NOT what our Founding Father's had in mind for America...

It's ALL about the MONEY and not much about the 'people' anymore in American politics...

What do YOU think???

For Now, That's Just 'OUR' Opinion...

A Dose Of Daily Divine Inspiration...
A WORD WITH YOU...
By Ron Hutchcraft

I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "The Purpose-Driven Day."

Our son's announcement reminded both of us of a perspective that kids have almost instinctively and which many of us adults need to remember. This big thing we call life is really days. We don't live a life. We live a day. Right now, we're trying to do a Wednesday. We're designed to cut this massive assignment called life into bite-size chunks called days. Jesus said we should pray about our daily bread (Luke 6:11) and take up our cross daily (Luke 9:23) ... the 23rd Psalm says that "Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life." God says, "Your strength will equal your days" (Deuteronomy 33:25).

And there's a lot to be said for taking life, not as years or months or even weeks, but as a day - one 24-hour assignment from God. That's the perspective that Moses gives in our word for today from the Word of God in Psalm 90. He starts the psalm with the big picture when he says, "Lord, You have been our dwelling place for all generations ... from everlasting to everlasting, You are God." God's the One who's got the whole life perspective - the generation to generation perspective. How should we live so we line up our life with His great eternal purpose? Well, it says, "Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom."

If you want to live smart, you do life as purpose-driven days. Rick Warren's book, The Purpose-Driven Life, has been a giant bestseller that's touched millions of lives. But it's important to remember that the way to have a purpose -driven life is to have a purpose-driven day today. God takes all those days lived His way and He makes them into an awesome life! You do the day. God will do the life. That makes life manageable instead of overwhelming. It makes it doable instead of undoable.

None of us knows how many days we have left, of course. Psalm 139 assures us that "all the days ordained for me were written in Your book before one of them came to be." But we don't know when those days are going to run out. So there's not a day to waste. My goal needs to be to make this day count for the things that matter to God. A purpose-driven day begins in the personal presence of God as you spend non-negotiable time with Him in His Word, the Bible, looking for His direction and experiencing His personalized love.

Each day, start with Jesus. Each day, look for people who need you, not people who can meet your needs. Each day, confess and renounce the sin that may have brought you down yesterday. Each day, give each member of your family all of you, even if it's only for a short time. Each day, you pray for God to give you an opportunity to tell someone about your relationship with Jesus. Each day, encourage as many people as you can. Each day, make some progress on your long "to do" list, putting the most important ones first. And each day, at the end, sign off with God, crowning Jesus the Lord of what you didn't get done today.

Some years ago, Billy Graham was asked by a reporter what the biggest surprise had been in his life. He said, "The brevity of it." He's right. Every day needs to count. This day needs to count. And one day you'll be able to stand before Jesus and lay at His feet a whole life lived for Him - one good day at a time!

I want to invite you to visit our website at www.yoursforlife.net, and there just briefly I want to explain to you either in a way you can listen to or a way you can read how to be sure you belong to Him. Or if you'd rather receive Yours For Life in print, you can call us for it at 877-741-1200. The website again is www.yoursforlife.net .

"THE TALK SHOW AMERICAN" ---

'10,000 would die' in A-plant attack on Iran

A major American attack on Iran's nuclear sites would kill up to 10,000 people and lead to war in the Middle East, a report says today.

Hundreds of scientists and technicians would be targets in the opening salvos as the attacks focused on eliminating further nuclear development, the Oxford Research Group says in Iran: Consequences of a War.

The research coincides with reports that strategists at the Pentagon are drawing up plans for "a last resort" strike if diplomacy fails. Plans for an assault have taken on "greater urgency" in recent months, The Sunday Telegraph said.

Tacticians at central command and strategic command, who report to Donald Rumsfeld, the defence secretary, have been identifying targets and the weapons needed to hit them.

The Oxford report says that Britain could be drawn into the conflict if the Prime Minister allowed American B2 bombers, which can carry 40,000lb of precision bombs, to use bases at Fairford, Glos, and on the Indian Ocean island of Diego Garcia.

Precision bombing could put Iran's weapons programme back five to 10 years but within a month the situation would become "an extremely dangerous conflict", says Prof Paul Rogers, the report's author.

The attack would result in "a protracted military confrontation" involving Israel, Lebanon and some Gulf states.

More than 100 American bombers, many based on carriers in the Gulf, would take part in a huge simultaneous surprise air attack on 20 key nuclear and military facilities, the report says.

If the targets included the nuclear reactor at Bushehr, which will become fully fuelled this year, a radioactive cloud could spread over the Gulf. Iran's small navy, which includes three submarines, would have to be attacked to negate threats to vital shipping lanes in the Straits of Hormuz.

But Iran could still retaliate with suicide speedboats, possibly leading to crippling rises in the price of oil.

Report: American 'patriot' tried to blow up oil lines

Federal agents think American sought to wreck U.S. economy with al-Qaida

Is he an American patriot, or a terrorist trying to kill the U.S. economy?

That's the question surrounding Michael Curtis Reynolds, a 47-year-old unemployed resident of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., who federal agents say worked with al-Qaida in a plot to blow up the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, a Pennsylvania pipeline, and a New Jersey refinery.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Reynolds is not publicly charged with terrorism, but a federal prosecutor said in a December hearing that Reynolds attempted to "provide material aid to al-Qaida" and that the case "involves a federal offense of terrorism."

"He was doing it as a plan to disrupt governmental function, to change the government's actions in foreign countries, and to impact on the national debate about the war," Assistant U.S. Attorney John Gurganus Jr. said at the hearing.

Reynolds, described by his former father-in-law Richard Danise as a "John Wayne wanna-be," has been held in the Lackawanna County jail in Pennsylvania without bail on unrelated weapons charges since Dec. 5. "I got the mortgage for him," Danise told the paper. "He literally wanted to build a castle, with turrets and everything else. But he had no credit, and he never broke ground."

Reynolds' lawyer, Philip Gelso, declined any comment, as did U.S. Attorney's Office spokeswoman Heidi Havens who indicated her office "does not comment on active investigations."

The FBI reportedly conducted a sting two months ago, as Reynolds was allegedly drawn to a meeting with a purported al-Qaida operative about 25 miles from a hotel, in Pocatello, Idaho, where he expected to get $40,000 to finance the alleged plot.

The Inquirer says Reynolds' letters, computer drawings and e-mails detailed his plan to explode trucks filled with propane along the Alaskan pipeline. This included "information on explosive devices, site plans and placement of explosive devices." He also allegedly planned to blow up sections of the Transcontinental Pipeline, a natural-gas pipeline that runs from the Gulf Coast, through Pennsylvania, to New Jersey and New York City. The government also believes he targeted Standard Oil Co. in Perth Amboy, N.J., as well as the Williams Refinery in Opal, Wyo.

According to Gurganus, Reynolds hoped the attacks on the oil industry would "disrupt governmental function," provoke opposition to the Iraq war, drive up fuel prices, and "lend to the efforts by al-Qaida to terrorize this nation."

Federal officials say Reynolds tried to disavow any alleged conspiracy when he was questioned by the FBI. He told them that he, too, was a patriot and was looking to expose an al-Qaida cell operating inside the United States.

"He claimed he was trying to lure this terrorist group in," Gurganus said in court.

Tom Daschle, Jane Harman: Don't Stop Wiretap Program

Former Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle, along with the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, Jane Harman, said emphatically yesterday that President Bush should continue his controversial terrorist wiretapping program.

Daschle was asked by NBC "Meet the Press" moderator Tim Russert: "Knowing what we know now, should the president stop this program?"

The former top Senate Democrat responded: "No, absolutely not. I think it’s a very valuable program."

Moments later, Russert asked Rep. Harman: "Do you think the program should be stopped

"No," she responded. "I think the program should go on."
Both Democrats qualified their endorsements of the wiretapping program, saying it should be restructured to comply with the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.

"I think we’ve got to respect the rule of law," former Sen. Daschle explained. "I think there ought to be an investigation by the appropriate committees of Congress and look into NSA to see how we might [change] it effectively."

After Rep. Harman offered her endorsement, she added: "I think the program should fully comply with FISA."

The California Democrat also said that she "deplored" the leak to the New York Times that exposed the program in December.

Poll: GOP Has Edge in 2008 Prez Race

The 2008 race for the White House is looking good for the GOP.

That's the conclusion of a new Fox News poll, which finds that strong support from within their party as well as from majorities of independents helps Republican candidates outperform Democratic candidates in head-to-head presidential matchups.

The poll asked about Republican candidates Arizona Sen. John McCain and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Democratic candidates Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry and New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Overall, the Republican candidates top their Democratic opponents, and while the two Republican candidates get about the same level of support in each trial heat, Clinton performs significantly better than 2004 Democratic presidential nominee Kerry.

Among registered voters, Giuliani bests Clinton by 11 percentage points and Kerry by 19 points. McCain tops Clinton by 13 percentage points and Kerry by 20 points. These results are in line with past Fox News results on these vote questions, with the only real change being a lessening of support for Kerry.
There are clear differences in the amount of support the candidates receive from within their own party. For instance, Giuliani and McCain capture between 84 percent to 89 percent of the Republican vote in the matchups, while Clinton captures 70 percent to 75 percent among Democrats, and Kerry’s highest is 65 percent.

Furthermore, Democrats are two-to-three times more likely than Republicans to say they would vote for the other party’s candidate. In the Giuliani-Clinton vote, 17 percent of Democrats say they would vote for the Republican, while 7 percent of Republicans say they would vote for Democrat. The other matchups show even higher numbers of party switchers among Democrats.

What about swing voters? The Republican candidates receive over 50 percent of the vote among self-identified independents in each of the four matchups.

Clinton has the highest portion of voters that say they would "definitely” vote for her, but she also has about twice as many as Giuliani and McCain that say "under no conditions” would they vote for her.

Over a third (35 percent) say they would definitely vote for Clinton, 19 percent say maybe and 44 percent say no way. In comparison, 30 percent would definitely vote for McCain, 40 percent would consider it and 22 percent definitely would not vote for him. Giuliani’s results are almost identical to McCain’s.

On a wide-ranging list of individuals, the poll asked the simple question — "would this person make a good president?” Three people receive support from at least half of voters: Giuliani (60 percent), McCain (55 percent) and Clinton (50 percent). Nearly half think Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice (47 percent) and John Kerry (45 percent) would be good.

A third (34 percent) think former Vice President Al Gore would make a good president, putting him ahead of talk show host/entrepreneur Oprah Winfrey (24 percent), Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass. (23 percent), and George Pataki (15 percent). Oprah receives twice as much support as real estate developer/television personality Donald Trump (11 percent) and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (11 percent).

AP Poll: Surveillance Program Gains Support

President Bush's monthlong campaign to convince the public that the government's eavesdropping program is an essential anti-terrorism tool appears to have made an impact, a new AP-Ipsos poll suggests.

Some 48 percent now support the administration's program to monitor - without a court warrant - some U.S.-based calls with suspected links to terrorists. That's up from 42 percent last month. Half now say the administration should have to get a warrant, down from 56 percent one month ago.

Bush has been particularly successful at making his case for the National Security Agency's controversial monitoring among men and core segments of his base.

After weeks of insisting that divulging details would harm the program, the White House relented Wednesday and briefed House intelligence committee lawmakers. Thursday, the Senate learned more about the NSA program.
